“This is our Moment: Strengthening Community Ties”
2009 Promising Pals Kick Off
The 23rd Annual Promising Pal Kickoff Event took place on Wednesday, December 17, 2008. The theme chosen by the Promising Pal Committee for this year is “This is our Moment: Strengthening Community Ties.”  We are asking pals and students to think and write to one another about the connections in our communities. This year every pal and every student will receive the Promising Pals book, “Born Before Plastic,” by the Grub Street Writers. This book is a collection of memoirs written by residents from Boston neighborhoods.

Guest speakers arrived early in the morning and were ushered to classrooms throughout the school. Our esteemed speakers captivated our students with their memories about life in Boston during the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. Eight authors were available for each grade level; they spent about a half hour reading from their published work, reminiscing about their past and answering questions from our students.

This was a unique experience for our students and staff to speak with published authors about their writing and life in Boston. Having the opportunity to hear primary source accounts of life in the city as well as get a glimpse of yesteryear, through the eyes of another.

Carl Vickers entertained the sixth grade students in the auditorium with a special dance. He reminisced about his rumble seat and lessons he has learned throughout his lifetime that have made him the respectable and educated man that he is today. Students were interested to learn that Carl graduated from the “Tim”. Listening to Cheryl Jackson speak about her association with the Black Panthers raised questions from the students about whether she was frightened of being harmed standing up for her rights. Students who questioned Marion LeCaine about her experiences during the attack on Pearl Harbor were mainly concerned about how she managed to carry on her daily life during such a turbulent time. With the cooperation of all staff, parents, and students this year’s Promising Pals Program annual event at the Timilty will be our best yet!
